British first day post stamp | Zeppelin L-46 at war | commanded by Kaptitanleutnant Hollender

Zeppelin LZ94 L46

role : maritime patrol, ASW, reconnaissance & bombing raids

importance : ****

first flight : 24 April 1917 operational :

country : Germany

commander : Kapitanleutnant Heinrich Hollender

class : T

production : 2 airships of this class

general information :

19 reconnaissance missions around the North Sea; 3 raids on England dropping 5,700 kg (12,600 lb) of bombs. Took part in the silent raid 19 October 1917 on England in which many Zeppelins were lost, but L46 returned home safe taken by the wind over neutral Holland back to Germany. During the raid it dropped 10 HE bombs around Walcott, Norwich, damaging Walcott Hall and farm ( 52°50’24”N 1°30’13”E ). It dropped more bombs but causing only little damage like broken windows.

Later L46 was destroyed in the  Ahlhorn explosion in Germany on 5 January 1918
